I am very happy with my purchase. The double apex is key to allow daisy-chaining and lengthening the "loop" in the event of securing the bike to something large like a telephone pole. I also appreciate that both locks a keyed alike, so I only need one key while I'm riding. Understandably, the design feels a lot more clunky than a cable or chain link lock that is flexible all over, versus the "elbow" joints on the apex. However, after just a few uses you get used to it and it becomes very simple to use. I would highly recommend this purchase to anyone wanting to secure their bike.
We ordered a pair of matching-key Altor Apex locks to add to our collection of U-locks, chains, and cables.
Although my primary purpose was to use them with the 4-bike hitch-mounted Yakima rack on our Prius for road trips, I have already used them and have been impressed with their ease of use. The multiple joints make fitting the locks around our ornamental cast iron handrail and through the wheels/frames very simple, and I am slowly learning that I do not need a key to lock the bikes up.
I have one concern: the hard finish seems to be less protective than the rubber-like coating on some U-locks and on our cables: should I make a fabric sleeve to fit over the lock so it does not scratch my nice bikes?
The APEX series of locks are some very nice locks. They are very nicely designed and you can tell they have paid attention to some of the security aspects. Also they handle quite nicely. I prefer the titanium version of the lock though. I'd say that is the version of the lock that really stands out in terms of at least perceived performance as compared to weight. However, they could use some improvement in the mounting options. As it is now it only sells with a mount that mounts on bottle cage screws or an optional saddle bag. This does not give very many options to mount the lock. Even though one can buy, from other vendors, frame wrap around adapters that provide bottle cage mounting screw holes, it would be good if a mount that directly wraps around the frame was offered. The current mount is also a bit fragile. After having broken a few mounts I don't trust it to hold the lock secure but need to add a security strap. I have plans to make my own mount but it would be so much better if one could just buy it.
